Exploring Hemp Mats as Custom-Fit Cage Liners

Could a hemp growing mat have a useful role beyond the greenhouse? One application worth exploring is a removable liner for metal cage trays in animal care settings.

A neatly fitted hemp mat could add a softer layer over a stainless steel floor while making liner changes more straightforward. Before using a growing mat around animals, however, its composition and suitability for the intended species need to be checked.

Why a custom fit matters

Cage trays come in different dimensions. A liner cut to the tray’s internal measurements can cover the floor without excess material bunching up around the edges.

For a tray measuring 87 × 55 cm, for example, a matching rectangular mat offers a simple starting point for a fit test. Check the tray’s corners and any raised fittings before ordering larger quantities.

For facilities managing multiple enclosures, consistent sizing could also reduce preparation time during routine liner changes.

What does 1300 g/m² mean?

A mat specified at 1300 g/m² contains 1,300 grams of material per square metre. This describes its weight per area—not its exact thickness.

Thickness, firmness and durability also depend on how the fibres are processed and held together. When comparing options, ask for both the material weight and the measured thickness rather than assuming a heavier mat will perform better.

Potential benefits to evaluate

A hemp liner may provide a more comfortable surface than bare metal. Its ability to absorb moisture could also be useful, provided soiled material is replaced promptly.

A sample trial can help answer practical questions:

  • Does the mat sit flat and stay in place?
  • How does it perform when damp?
  • Does it shed fibres during handling or use?
  • How easily can it be removed and replaced?

Dust levels deserve particular attention. A claim such as “99% dust-free” should be supported by product-specific testing; it should not be assumed simply because a mat is made from hemp.

Start with a sample

A product designed for growing plants is not automatically suitable for animal bedding. Confirm its ingredients, any binders or treatments, and whether it has been assessed for animal contact. A qualified animal-care professional should evaluate species-specific concerns, including chewing, ingestion and loose fibres.

Testing a sample before placing a bulk order allows fit, handling and performance to be assessed in the intended setting.
